In concerts at Pomona, Montville and Buderim, Cello Dreaming aims to open up the mysterious and perceived stuffy world of classical music to all-comers - savvy arty. music lover types, novice concert goers, budding musicians. If you thought classical music world was stuffy, think again. Cellist Louise King challenges this perception with audience patrons returning to see her perform time and time again because of her warmth, innovative presentations, programming and stage personality. "People do race out for tickets! I like it when people get as excited about my concerts as I do!" says Louise. "I feel that warmth and enthusiasm when I sit down to play, particularly in lovely small venues. It lifts my playing to new levels and I find that energy exchange between listener and my sound draws my music form a deep and powerful place inside me - like a soul talking through my cello. That's what I am - a transmitter. I feel music is all around us and all I have to do is tune in and let it flow through my fingers. All the audience has to do is listen, heart open. It makes it all worth my while when I get people I've never met tell me how much I moved them when I play. It's the best high a musician can get."
Many of you experienced concert-goers won't be disappointed with the standard of performance and choice of music and you never know you may learn a few things or two about Mr. Bach along the way. The program includes the famous and meditative suites I & II for solo cello by Bach, his gregarious sonata in D for gamba and harpsichord, a fiendish Toccata for harpsichord all interspersed with readings, anecdotes and poetry inspired by Bach. 28/04/08 BACH ODYSSEY - 22, 23 & 25 May - POMONA, MONTVILLE & BUDERIM
Intimate concert of Bach's music with readings and poetry - the man, his fame and his music.
Louise King CELLO & Huguette Brassine HARPSICHORD and guest narrator Bruce Hamilton
Everyone's heard of a Stradivarius violin. They are worth millions and usually locked up in bank vaults and used under special arrangements with artists such as Nigel Kennedy. Well, you can hear a rare English cello made at the same time the Stradivarius workshop were creating violins in the concert 'Bach Odyssey' presented by Cello Dreaming. A rare, one-of-a-kind cello made circa 1780 will be played by Louise King in the concerts on 22nd May in Pomona, 23rd May in Montville and 25th May in Buderim.
Internationally acclaimed, English cellist Louise King who now calls Sunshine Coast home, is performing on a Dearlove cello - the only instrument of its kind in Australia. "Some family friends found it in their attic, broken and forgotten about and we took a risk buying it and repairing but a happy one for me as it is now very valuable and extremely rare" Louise says. "It has taken over three extensive repair jobs over the last 20 years to bring this beautiful instrument back from the brink of firewood."
Louise has used the expertise of renown instrument maker Simon Brown from Sydney to go back in time and convert her Dearlove cello into a baroque cello. "Cellos in Bach's time used to be played without an endpin resting it on the calves of the players legs and with handmade gut strings with an arrow shaped bow rather than the modern concaved bow. The sound is much earthier, gutsier and what Bach would have been hearing from his orchestra. There's something magical about hearing music the way the composer almost 300 years ago intended it to sound - like going back into time through a musical looking glass."
Louise is the only cellist in Queensland to have her specialist training in Baroque and Classical cello and finds her skills are in demand by Queensland Conservatorium of Music, Australian Youth Orchestra and performs in Australian arts festivals with visiting international musicians and members of the burgeoning Early Music scene nationwide such as Sirius Ensemble and Australian Brandenburg Orchestra. Louise says, "Wherever I go to perform I like to invest in the community by listening to budding musicians young and old in masterclasses or workshops. Education is the key to understanding and appreciating the performing arts. That's why my concerts always aim to educate and inform in an engaging and innovative way."
The Dearlove cello has been used and abused. "If only this instrument could talk -the adventures it could tell me!" Just in the time Louise has owned it, it has been refused air passage from Cairo to London resulting in a solo cello round the world trip. It has entertained passengers on the trains in England - "I used to practice in empty compartments on my way to London for my weekly lessons at the Royal College of Music" and travelled the world extensively with Louise on her many travels. It even accompanied her on camel back into the Desert of Egypt where she performed Bach to the local Bedouins under a moonlit desert sky. "I've busked in the rain, played on it in smokey bars and left it on a minibus in Hong Kong to be returned by an escort of police to the cultural centre where I was due to perform in less than an hour!"
After the critically- acclaimed sell-out success of Serenading the Moon in April, Cello Dreaming is presenting Bach Odyssey in the heart of the Coast. Music by Bach for solo cello and with harpsichord coupled with readings and poetry. Journey into his life as a man and discover how his music still deeply affects us today. A perfect way to inspire your kids to do some practice, Bach Odyssey is a concert promising to introduce J.S. Bach - the Master of Music - like no other. Intimate, refreshing, educational and entertaining with anecdotes, short stories and poetry about Bach and his legacy. Music nourishing and relaxing for the soul with toe-tapping fresh dance rhythms, Louise King and her fellow guest artist, Huguette Brassine, one of the most eminent harpsichordists and teachers in Australia, will perform two solo suites for solo cello, a sonata for gamba and continuo and a Toccata for solo harpsichord. You will hear the famous Prelude for solo cello featured on the 2003 Russell Crowe film Master and Commander, music to swoon and dance by.
Bach's music has had an incredible effect on history. It has inspired film-makers, poets, feminists, philosophers, rock-stars and airlines! Anyone who's learnt an instrument at school will have played music by JSB. This concert promises the chance to hear Bach's music the way he intended it to be performed on original instruments- a very satisfying way to spend an hour and a half of your free time.
