Neighbour Day is the perfect day to say thanks for being a great neighbour.

In celebration of Neighbour Day, the community is invited to enjoy an afternoon of free Big Games in Nambour Courtyard, corner of Currie and Bury Streets from 3 - 4.30pm on Friday, March 24.

Neighbour Day on Sunday, March 26, is Australia’s annual celebration of community and council encourages people to connect with those who live nearby.

To get into the spirit of Neighbour Day, council invites community members to get to know their fellow residents at the free Big Games afternoon at Nambour.

Alternatively people can organise and register their own event via the Neighbour Day website and download a free kit to help celebrate and make organising an event easy.

Community Portfolio Cr Jenny McKay said Neighbour Day could be as big or small as you like.

“It could be a little as dropping off a kind note to an elderly neighbour or inviting them over for a cuppa,” Cr McKay said.

“You can never have too many friends around you and your note or invitation may make a significant difference to the life of your neighbour.”

Cr McKay said the annual theme for Neighbour Day 2017 highlighted the importance of social connection, particularly for the elderly.

“Our Sunshine Coast Social Strategy highlighted the importance of ensuring people are connected and are able to interact and contribute to a shared sense of wellbeing,” she said.

“Community connection makes us feel better as it helps prevent loneliness, isolation and depression.

“When you connect with the people who live nearby, you’re showing you care about what happens locally and are directly supporting safe, friendly and resilient neighbourhoods.

“Council will continue to work with the region’s social enterprises that assist the most vulnerable in our region to ensure we build and support an even stronger Sunshine Coast community.”

What people are saying about the benefits of getting involved in Neighbour Day:

“This is the first time we have hosted a Neighbour Day party and we were overwhelmed by how many people came. This is the beginning of an annual event in our neighbourhood that will strengthen our community to look out for each other and thrive.”

“I had always wanted to have a great connected neighbourhood but didn’t really know where to start. Neighbour Day gave me ideas, tools and an excuse to get on with it. Most people say they have been meaning to get to know their neighbours, but many don’t get around to it. Neighbour Day gives a time frame and a sense of urgency.”
