Indigenous culture and heritage is the focus of the Booin Gari festival to be held at United Synergies on Tuesday, April 8, 2014 Now in its seventh year, the FREE event attracts visitors from across the State, keen to acknowledge and celebrate Indigenous culture in the region.
The event’s name - Booin Gari - belongs to the Kabi Kabi (Gubbi Gubbi) language and means Come This Way and the event is a true opportunity to build positive cross-cultural relationships and for everyone to share in Indigenous culture. The event will feature a range of guest presentations from local community, artists and performers including renowned band Oka.
There will also be cultural and art workshops, bush tucker tastings, traditional Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander games, dance and didgeridoo workshops. Especially for the kids there will be a jumping castle, badge making, boomerang painting art workshops and a climbing wall.
Support services will provide displays and be available to assist with community information. All activities and performances on the day, including a sausage sizzle and bush tucker will be free. This year the headline acts will be Oka and The Floating Bridges. Booin Gari provides an opportunity for Indigenous young people and their families to come together and celebrate their culture and share it with the broader Sunshine Coast community. Booin Gari will be held at United Synergies, 14 Ernest Street, Tewantin between 10.00am and 2.00 pm.
