Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) will join key partner agencies in Coolum and Peregian Springs this month to discuss bushfire preparation and prevention.

Coolum State School and Peregian Springs State School will host representatives from QFES, the Sunshine Coast Regional Council and Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service at events organised by SEQ Fire and Biodiversity Consortium.

The open forum at Coolum will kick off on Wednesday, March 15 at 7pm and then head to Peregian Springs on March 29.

Both will canvass bushfire management on the Sunshine Coast and steps locals can take to prepare themselves, families and properties for bushfires.

“The Sunshine Coast is experiencing an unusually long bushfire season and Coolum and Peregian Springs have felt the impact of this firsthand,” QFES Superintendent James Haig said.

“These forums will arm residents with the information they need keep themselves and their families safe if a bushfire occurs.

“Attendees will also learn more about how QFES and partner agencies manage the bushfire risk at Coolum and Peregian Springs.”

The meetings come as the Sunshine Coast continues to experience bushfires, despite March being a time when bushfire activity is traditionally at its lowest.”

“Ongoing dry conditions and a combination of low soil moisture means the bushfire threat on the Sunshine Coast may continue well into March and beyond,” Mr Haig said.

“It is important Coolum and Peregian Springs residents are ready for this and know what to do so they can act quickly if there is a bushfire.”

SEQ Fire and Biodiversity Consortium Manager and fire ecology expert Dr Samantha Lloyd will host proceedings and said it was essential residents understood how a bushfire could affect them.

“Dangerous fire weather conditions are likely to worsen with climate change, so it is essential residents have the information they need to reduce the threat of bushfires in their area,” Ms Lloyd said.

“This event will equip attendees with vital bushfire preparation information and help them understand what they can do to help fire agencies, land managers and local governments prepare for and respond to bushfires in their area.”
