Butts to be extinguished as Coast councils join forces

Maroochy Shire and Caloundra City Councils have joined forces in an effort to help extinguish the cigarette butt litter problem on the Sunshine Coast.

The two Councils will launch the Sunshine Coast BUTTsOUT campaign on Friday <March 5> as part of national Clean Up Australia Day celebrations.

Caloundra City Mayor, Cr Don Aldous, together with Maroochy Shire Mayor, Cr Alison Grosse said the BUTTsOUT campaign, which has already been introduced to more than 60 other Councils across the country, aims to encourage smokers to responsibly discard their cigarette butts with a unique butt-shaped personal ashtray.

"Every year, seven billion cigarette butts are discarded across the nation.

"It can take up to 12 years for cigarette butts to break down and less than one hour for the toxins to leach into waterways.

"With the help of BUTTsOUT Australia, we hope we can gain the support of smokers on the Sunshine Coast to use the BUTTsOUT portable ashtrays, rather than throwing their butts into the drain or on to the ground."

The fire-resistant, reusable and Australian made personal ashtrays are small enough to clip on your belt and provide a safe and efficient way of discarding cigarette butts, and are being distributed in their thousands by the two Councils.

Local businesses are also being encouraged to support the campaign by buying their own supply to hand out or sell to customers.

"A key environmental outcome of this campaign is to eliminate the damage to wildlife and waterways as well as improving the aesthetic standards of public areas," Cr Grosse said.

"Cigarette butt litter is an important local environmental issue, and while the State Government's responsibility is to regulate where people can smoke, it is up to local councils to clean up the discarded butts.

"To do this, we are calling on the support of businesses and the community to help us tackle this unsightly problem."

Cr Grosse said both Caloundra and Maroochy councils have active litter management strategies in place, and this campaign would serve to compliment their ongoing awareness and education programs.

National BUTTsOUT co-founder Steve Brossman will be a special guest at the launch, along with larger-than-life character Bluey, who will be spotted around Maroochy and Caloundra over the next week, participating in Clean Up Australia Day events.
For more information on where to get your own BUTTsOUT ashtray, or for more information about the campaign, contact the Caloundra City Council Customer Service Centre or the Maroochy Customer Service Centre.
Selected Coles Express outlets on the Sunshine Coast will be the first in Australia to retail the coloured Butts Out personal ashtrays. The ashtrays are also available from a number of other retailers around the country.
