A short tour of a coffee plantation site with tastings of locally grown coffee types, and a visit to Maleny's award winning milk producer, Maleny Dairies.
This tour combines a short tour of a coffee plantation site with tastings of locally grown coffee types, and a visit to Maleny's award winning milk producer, Maleny Dairies.
After visiting Des Harries' property (a local coffee grower and nursery plant supplier), the tour will proceed to nearby Maleny Dairies, where tastings of various local coffee beans from Blackall Range and surrounding areas will be on offer - together with information and advice on coffee making styles. Information on the local coffees will be available to patrons.
Local coffee grower grower, Des Harries, and the General Manager of Brisbane's Merlo Coffee, Lachlan Hosking, will be the guides for this tour. (Some local hinterland growers send their coffee beans to Merlo Coffee Factory for the final roasting process).
Lachlan Hosking is well qualified to oversee the coffee tastings -10 years in PNG, working in different places throughout the Highlands, he was involved in growing and buying coffee, and processing it from both cherry and parchment form to Green Bean. It was then exported world-wide. He also ran a small postal roasting market that distributed roasted coffee to most countries. Lachlan is now General Manager of Merlo Coffee and has helped Merlo's coffee roasting process increase from around 400 kg per week to roast over 5 tonnes per week. He also oversees the development of new blends.
Apart from coffee tastings of different coffee beans, there will be comparisons of different coffee beans across a number of similar drinks eg. cappucino, flat white etc. Explanations will also be provided on how to get the best out of various items of home coffee equipment. This could include a question and answer session, plus demonstration and tasting with a plunger.
Then follows a morning tea indulgence in selected coffees (café latte, cappuccino, flat white, mocha etc), courtesy of Maple 3 Café and Maleny Dairies.
To complement the coffee indulgence, a brief tour of the Hopper family's award winning Maleny Dairies will highlight how this modern integrated dairy uses state of the art processes to produce and maintain high quality, fresh Guernsey (and goat's) milk and yoghurts.
