28 December 2005  Caloundra City gears up to celebrate Queen's Baton Relay

Caloundra City residents will be encouraged to take to the streets when the Queen's Baton Relay passes through town on Wednesday 1 February.

Caloundra City Mayor Don Aldous is encouraging the community to get behind local runners, with a special celebration in Kings Beach Park to mark the event.

"As part of the festivities to welcome the Queens Baton to Caloundra City, Council will host a community celebration in Kings Beach Park from 3.45pm," Cr Aldous said.

"Come down and cheer on the runners and share the huge celebratory cake as we make the most of this opportunity to not only showcase our beautiful City but also our support."

The baton will arrive in Caloundra at about 3.20pm on Wednesday 1 February and will travel up Arthur Street to Kings Beach Park before heading up De Vene Avenue and into Edmund St. The baton will then be transported by convey from the William St intersection up to Kawana, where another two runners will carry it along Sportsman's Parade and through the Quad Park complex. The baton then departs the City, continuing its journey through the Sunshine Coast.

Nine community members have been selected to carry the baton on its Caloundra journey, including Tony Robinson, Zane Holmes, Ian Grant, Susan Allchin, Glenda Lloyd, Gordon Watson, Erin Roberts, Brendan Burkett and Peter Nearhos.

The Queen's Baton will arrive in Australia on January 24 and then travel 21,500 kilometres across the country - 9700 by road, 9300 by air, 1000 by sea and 1500 by rail.

It will visit more than 500 communities and be carried by 3500 relay runners in the final 50 days of its epic journey from Buckingham Palace to the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne.
