Caloundra exhibits rare private art collection
A first-time showing of one of the nation's largest privately-owned art collections provides the latest temptation to visit Caloundra on Queensland's Sunshine Coast.
Privately Collecting, the Ken Hinds Cultural Heritage Collection will be exhibited at Caloundra Regional Art Gallery from February 1 until March 12, 2006.
Artists include Linda Syddick Napaltjarri, Clifford Possum Tjapaltjarri, Sidney Nolan, Pirrmangka Napanangka, Mantua Nangala, Billy Stockman Tjapaltjarri, Judy Cassab, Fred Williams, Arthur Merric Bloomfield Boyd, Nora Heysen, Robert Juniper, Gary Shead, Tim Storrier, Donald Friend, Albert Tucker and Brett Whiteley.
Caloundra Regional Art Gallery Director John Waldron said that more than 90 paintings, toys and ceramics, from the extensive collection would be featured.
"Ken Hinds is a private collector, based on the Sunshine Coast, who has built a substantial collection inspired by a lifetime's interest in art," Mr Waldron said.
"The collection traces the history of Australian art from the late 1800's, through the 30's, 40's, and 50's and offers a rare opportunity to see privately-owned work by our leading artists."
"The Indigenous section and the toy collection also represent another record of our cultural and social history."
Ken Hinds has been actively collecting paintings, sculpture, films, art-books, pottery and toys since 1960. Currently, the collection totals almost 30,000 items of which 1500 are paintings.
