A passion for big issues
Caroline Overington has never been one to shy away from the big issues. Her reporting of the AWB oil-for-food scandal in Iraq and her investigation of the Norma Khouri Forbidden Love affair won her journalistic acclaim and two Walkley Awards. A senior writer and columnist with The Australian, Caroline is the author of two
non-fiction books - Only in New York, based on her family experience in the USA whilst working as a foreign correspondent for The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age; and Kickback, which tells the behindthe- scenes story of the AWB scandal. Her move to fiction writing came about, she says, because her years as an
investigative reporter frustrated her with its limitations on what she could write about the problem of child abuse.
The answer was to write a novel which would enable her to examine all aspects of this taboo subject in depth. The result was Ghost Child – hailed by many critics and described by one reviewer as “a thoughtful approach to troubling reallife events’’. Meet Caroline as she talks to Brisbane 4BC presenter Alexandria Bernard about Ghost Child and her latest novel I Came to Say Goodbye which deals with mental health, child protection, immigration and, above all, family drama. As you will see, Caroline doesn’t shy away from the big issues!
