This year the festival theme is Adventure and Misadventure.

With four bookshops, numerous writers in residence and myriad book events and book clubs, Maleny has a well-earned reputation as a town of books, reading and writing.

DISPLAY OF FIRST EDITIONS OF AUSTRALIAN LITERATURE - Maleny Library
View an outstanding display of rare first edition books, by leading Australian authors, ​around the festival theme - Adventure and Misadventure.

WRITING THE IMAGE - A WRITERS' WORKSHOP - Hinterland Business Centre
​Writers of fiction, poetry and memoir are invited to take part in a workshop that explores the use of concrete imagery.

Outspoken Conversation - Maleny Community Centre Hall
Award-winning local author Steven Lang swaps chairs for a conversation about his new novel, Hinterland. His interviewer will be the festival's guest Kate Evans from ABC Radio National's Books and Arts Daily and Books Plus.

Natalie Jane Prior will introduce her latest book Lucy's Book - a picture book for everyone who has ever known what it is to love a book with all your heart. ​

MALENY BIG BOOK CLUB   - Maleny RSL Hall
​Gather with booklovers and readers at one of the weekend's signature events - ​the Big Book Club.
Meet in small groups to discuss this year's book, LaRose by American author Louise Erdrich. LaRose is Erdrich's 15th novel. It was awarded USA's 2016 National Book Critics Circle Award for Fiction.
Then enjoy a whole group discussion about issues raised in the novel facilitated by Kate Evans, ABC Radio, Dr Clare Archer-Lean, USC and organisational psychologist Sue Collaro.

A girl named Sophie encounters the Big Friendly Giant who, despite his intimidating appearance, turns out to be a kindhearted soul who is considered an outcast by the other giants because unlike his peers ​he refuses to eat boys and girls.

Jasper Jones is a riveting and moving Australian coming of age film about Charlie Bucktin, a 14 year old bookish boy. On the night that Jasper Jones, the town's mixed race outcast shows him the dead body of young ​Laura Wiseheart, his life is changed forever. Entrusted with this secret, and believing Jasper to be innocent, Charlie embarks on a dangerous journey ​to find the killer.
Set over the scorching summer holidays of 1965, Charlie defeats the local racists, faces the breakup of his parents and falls head over heels in love as he discovers what it means to be truly courageous.
