Celtic Concert & Community Dance

Celebrate the fun of St.Patrick's Day on Sunday 18 March, 3-5:30pm at Eudlo Hall with a high energy, toe-tapping Celtic-inspired afternoon concert and community dance presented by Cello Dreaming and special guests The Maleny Céili Band. Come and experience the best of Celtic music for strings, piano and folk instruments performed by Cello Dreaming students, members of the Sunshine Coast Youth Orchestra, Noosa Orchestra and music scholars from schools all over the Sunshine Coast. Featuring some of Australia's most experienced and enthusiastic players of Celtic music, The Maleny Céili Band has been invited to travel down the range by acclaimed international professional cellist and Eudlo local, Louise King to present a traditional Irish Céili at Eudlo Hall.

A céilí (pronounced ‘cay-lee’) is a traditional Irish dance party. Even if you’ve never danced before, the experienced and enthusiastic dance caller, Davydd Macdonald, will lead you through the simple steps before letting you loose with the lively celtic music. Everyone is welcome to join in the fun from ages three to ninety-three and this Irish Céili is an experience for the whole family to enjoy. A professional piper and highland dancer will also be making a special appearance. Before the community dance begins, enjoy a varied program of well known traditional folk music from Ireland and Scotland featuring the musical talents of Louise King's private students and invited musical guests.

Cellist and teacher Louise King said "All of my students have enjoyed working on Celtic inspired music alongside their classical repertoire this term and are excited about bringing their new skills and confidence with improvisation and folk style to the concert platform. Presenting students concerts like this allows me, as a teacher, to fully develop a particular style and after taking part in one of Maleny Céili Band's workshops at Woodford Folk Festival this year, I knew I wanted my students to learn the dance steps as well as the notes to help them bring the music to life."

“The Céili Band is a great way for players to take the music learnt out of a class and into a great performance,” said Nicole Murray, who leads the Maleny Céili Band. “This is dance music, and the fun really happens when the dancers and players are together.” Nicole is an organiser of the Maleny Celtic Winter School, a not-for-profit local traditional folk music school held in June, which fosters local musicians, young and old, and encourages all skill levels in playing this community-based music. Doors open at 2:30pm. Proceeds from the concert and raffle will go towards the Eudlo Hall Piano Fund, a community initiative created by Louise King, a Eudlo based professional musician to raise funds to buy a baby concert grand piano for the community hall.

Louise King presents three student concerts annually at the Eudlo Hall and specialises in private string tuition, community string workshops, conducting, adjudication and performs internationally and nationally as a chamber musician and soloist for classical music festivals and professional orchestras. Louise King adds "I am excited about inviting music students and interested local musicians to the traditional tunes workshop on Sunday 18 March at 10:30-11:30am with Nicole Murray and Emma Nixon. This is an exclusive opportunity to get the chance to work with some of Australia's finest folk musicians in a fun workshop group setting, the way traditional folk music is taught around the world.

String players, guitarists, flautists, tin whistle, banjo or other folk instrumentalists are all welcome to join in. All music is provided and taught the traditional way at the class." Bookings for the workshop are essential on 5445 9171 and is $15 per participant. Anyone taking part in the class is invited to join in the afternoon performance.
