19 May 2006  Library week celebrates more than books

Books might be the traditional trade of libraries, but throughout Library and Information Week Caloundra City Libraries will celebrate the huge range of services offered to residents and visitors.

Library and Information Week, which will be held between May 22 and 28, aims to raise awareness about the contribution libraries make to communities across the country through a range of activities, events and presentations.

Caloundra City Mayor Don Aldous said libraries are an invaluable part of any community as a source of information, communication and as a community meeting place.

"Libraries today offer so much more than books - they offer information through a variety of sources including workshops, talks and internet access, education and entertainment for their local communities," Cr Aldous said.

"I commend Caloundra City Libraries for their ongoing commitment to residents of all ages through a diverse range of innovative and informative programs, which not only provide information but also help to bring different members of our community together.

"While in some ways communities seem to have no boundaries through the ever increasing use of internet communication, in other ways people have become more isolated and fragmented from neighbours and Caloundra City Libraries have made remarkable progress in breaking down these barriers and bringing people together."

A number of events have been planned at the City's library branches throughout Library and Information Week. Some are so popular they have already been booked out.
