The Story: The aftermath of the Khmer Rouge in the 1970’s has left Cambodia in a state of devastation.
With over 3,000,000 deaths due to execution, starvation, and disease, the people left behind are in desperate need of help. Due to the unfathomable poverty in Cambodia, daughters have become an asset to their families making them available for purchase. The majority of the girls are sold by their parents and taken to brothels forcing them to become child prostitutes.
The girls can be purchased for as little as 70 dollars and as young as 5-years-old. When recruited by brokers in a village, the girls’ families are sometimes told they will be employed as maids and will be able to send money home for the families. After the girls are purchased, they are brought to a safe house or hotel and locked in a room until they are sold to their first client. The first time is always more expensive as the girl is a virgin.
It is then common for the brokers to sew the girls back up after their first time with no anaesthetic so resale at virgin price is possible. If a purchased girl refuses to perform her sexual duties, she is brutally tortured until she consents to the rapist’s demands. Often afterwards, the girl is sold to other brothels as “used goods.” The cost for a sexual transaction is a pittance of approximately two dollars.
Ultimately, the girl is worked until she nears death or becomes too damaged to make the sexual broker further money. If the girl tries to escape or does not meet her daily quota of approximately 15-20 men per day, the girl is punished with prolonged torture and starvation. Young boys are now becoming a demand as the sex trade is fast grown and well known to pedophiles across the globe. Do not let their cries for help fall on deaf ears. The Chance to Make a Difference Although it seems overwhelming, you can make a difference. There is still hope for some of these girls.
Craig and Sara Drummond, and their two children, Lawson (5) and Jaeda (3), from Nambour, are making the ultimate sacrifice and saying goodbye to our beautiful coast to venture to Siem Reap, Cambodia. They will open an orphanage – an overdue safe haven – for abused children molested by the sex trade and devastating poverty. The Drummonds plan to make the move next year, but, in order to see the plan through, they need to raise $40,000.
Craig’s and Sara’s heart are moved by the children who have fallen victim to these unjust crimes within Asia. The sound of the children’s cry for help echoes through them. It’s a cry for justice that can only be appeased by ‘doing something’ where justice demands. For the Drummonds, Cambodia is that place. The orphanage will supply the children with safe shelter, food, clothing, hygiene, and education including English and Creative Arts.
The necessities and education provided will give the children the opportunity to create a brighter future for both the children and the future generations to come. Education will also be available to the families suffering from extreme poverty. Other programs will invite skilled nurses, day care workers, nannies, and teachers to come to Siem Reap on voluntary missions.
A program will also offer training for the youth of the Sunshine Coast, which will give everyday people willing to assist the opportunity to visit the orphanage and make a difference. But the Drummonds cannot do it alone. With your help, we can make people aware of the suffering. It’s time to make some noise!
