Christmas with Dickens
4MBS Classic FM brings their popular Brisbane stage production Christmas with Dickens to the Sunshine Coast. Joining them on stage is The Caloundra Chorale and Sarah Sullivan singing traditional Christmas Carols.
Christmas with Dickens is a magical Christmas experience based on the life and writings of the incomparable Charles Dickens and includes a brilliant enactment of his famous tale, A Christmas Carol.
The first half of the show is a look at the life of Dickens, from boyhood to adulthood, and the wonderfully fertile imagination that helped to create many of the Christmas traditions we cherish even in these modern times. Full of humour and pathos, it is an engaging lead-up to the second half, the enactment of Dickens's much loved Christmas story, A Christmas Carol.
In the second half, acclaimed actor, Tama Matheson, who also devised and directs the show, breathes life into all the characters in A Christmas Carol, from the old, bitter miser Scrooge to Tiny Tim, the sickly and crippled, yet happy boy, best known for his line, "God bless us, every one!"
The on-stage action is heightened by beautiful live piano accompaniment and The Caloundra Chorale, with soloist Sarah Sullivan. The choir adds to the atmosphere and helps to tell the story by singing Christmas carols at important moments in the story. As well as singing, The Caloundra Chorale will take an active role in the production by playing the terrifying "ghost of Christmas yet to come" and other supporting characters.
The show ends on a heart-warming note with The Caloundra Chorale singing the beautiful Christmas carol, Hark, the Herald Angels Sing, with which the audience is asked to join in. The audience will leave with a feeling of goodwill, having taken a journey of discovery through the imagination and spirit of Charles Dickens and his immortal tale, A Christmas Carol. The spirit of Christmas and a feeling of peace and goodwill toward all people will be felt by all.
Tama Matheson is an acclaimed actor/director who has recently returned from directing duties in Russia. He has appeared on TV in the popular series "Heartbeat" and "East Enders" also on stage in the UK and in Australia. He is currently 4MBS Classic FM's Director-in-Residence and in this role has directed (and starred) in very successful seasons of Peter Shaffer's play, Amadeus and Shakespeare's The Tempest. He was artistic director of the inaugural Shakespeare on Oxford festival, where he directed a major production of A Midsummer Night's Dream.
PRAISE FOR A DICKENSIAN CHRISTMAS
It was a tour-de-force for Matheson, an actor who can mine a text for its brilliant riches…Matheson's timing was impeccable. He was riveting as Dickens the storyteller, as Scrooge the Christmas grouch, spitting "bah-humbug" whenever he heard "Merry Christmas", even from his nephew, determined to goad the old guy into enjoying the feast. He trembled in terror when Marley's ghost and three apparitions warned him to forsake his life of gathering gold…His reference to Tiny Tim was heart-wrenching…
…this production affirmed that the simplicity of the spoken word can stimulate and satisfy, that you don't need mega-bucks for the potent theatre of make-believe...
