Clean Up Australia Day in Noosa for 2005 is on March 6th. and this year's National theme is "Put Rubbish Away For Good".

Statistics for last year showed that cigarette butts were the number one litter item, followed closely by plastic chip and confectionary bags, and plastic bottle caps and lids.  "Given that these are items that can easily be discarded in a proper receptacle, it is a sad reflection on some in our society that they can't be bothered to 'Do The Right Thing'," said Tony Haslam, Secretary of The Noosa Integrated Catchment Association (NICA).

"NICA took on the coordinating role last year and we have fronted up again in 2005," Mr Haslam said.

'Clean Up Australia Day fits in well with our objective of the protection and promotion of sustainable uses in the whole of the Noosa River Catchment, and it is also complementary to our ongoing and special programs aimed at cigarette butts and general litter reduction and prevention.' said Mr. Haslam.

"We are a community-based organisation, aiming to assist 22 sectors of the local community, government, and business to implement key priorities identified in the Noosa River Catchment Management Strategy.  The maintenance of Water Quality in our river and streams is a key objective that is helped enormously by litter reduction".

On the bright side, we get a great community response, and Clean Up Australia Day is traditionally a fun day.  People turn out in droves, not only around Noosaville, Tewantin and Noosa Heads, but also in our hinterland towns.

A new group in Teewah Village will be joining local residents in Boreen Point, Cooran, Cooroy, Noosa North Shore, and Pomona to organize themselves to clean up their own areas, and afterwards celebrate with their own local barbecue.  There is also a free barbecue for coastal volunteers at the Lions Park on Gympie Terrace.

Anyone wishing to join the volunteers on Sunday 6th March can obtain details of Clean Up sites by phoning NICA on 5449 9650.
