Our Coast to Coral Community Lecture series is back for 2018! Come and join Reef Check Australia and friends at SEA LIFE Sunshine Coast for an evening of discovery, inspiration and appreciation of our local marine, coastal and catchment environments. Each month we have a new, interesting and engaging speaker.
This month we'll hear from Dr Kathy Townsend: a Lecturer in Animal Ecology at the University of the Sunshine Coast, Fraser Coast Campus. As a lead academic of the internationally renown scientific programs “Project Manta” and “Turtles in Trouble”, she is a marine scientist with an interest in marine conservation and human impacts on the marine environment.
Dr. Kathy is a great believer in bridge the gap between academia and the general community. Kathy has established multiple community orientated research programs involving scientist, industry and community contributions: winning multiple prestigious awards for efforts in science and education. Her work has also been featured in multiple documentaries, including David Attenborough’s Great Barrier Reef.
Talk description: Project Manta is a multidisciplinary study of the biology and ecology of the manta rays of Australia. Relying heavily on input from citizen scientists, this national project is celebrating its ten-year anniversary. Join Dr. Townsend as she talks about the history of Project Manta, what advances have been made to our knowledge, and what we still need to find out about these gentle giants of the ocean.
The talk will be held in the Seal Stadium at SEALIFE Mooloolaba, on Parkyn Parade, Mooloolaba. Come along at 6:15 pm for a 6:30 pm start. Stay after the event for a discussion with the presenter and other attendees and enjoy a pizza-rific snack.
