Sunshine Coast residents can become part of Queensland's first Energy Conservation Community from today, with Sunshine Coast Mayor Bob Abbot and ENERGEX CEO Terry Effeney announcing that the initiative's website is now live and ready to take registrations.

Residents who join the Sunshine Coast Energy Conservation Community will receive a free energy conservation package worth up to $800, including the installation of electricity conservation devices that aim to reduce the amount of power used during peak times.

Those residents who sign up before the end of July 2010 will also get extra incentives including a free hot water efficiency check, air-conditioner clean and check, a standby power board, and a $50 voucher for the Queensland Government's ClimateSmart Home Service. ENERGEX will also make a $50 donation on their behalf to a local community benefit fund to help local schools and community groups conserve energy.

Cr Abbot encouraged residents from Mooloolaba, Sippy Downs and Mountain Creek to join up as part of the Energy Conservation Community to help make the Sunshine Coast Australia's most sustainable region.

"Since the Energy Conservation Communities initiative was announced last month we have received great feedback from Sunshine Coast residents wanting to be part of the program," Cr Abbot said.

"Residents now have the opportunity to officially join up to be part of this exciting initiative, so I'm encouraging every household from Mooloolaba, Sippy Downs and Mountain Creek to join together and show their commitment to sustainability on the Sunshine Coast."
