The University of the Sunshine Coast’s Art Gallery will host their
first ever community Art Market showcasing creative local art works on
Friday May 18 from 11.30am to 2pm.
Community visitors will enjoy free talks from local artists sharing their creative knowledge and guided tours of the University’s public art collection. It is also an opportunity for visitors to support local art groups and their work.
The Art Market is an outdoor event which will be held at the University Art Gallery courtyard. Several local art groups will have stalls showcasing their work, which will be available for purchase.
Visitors will be able to inspect the Art Gallery’s current exhibition, STUDIO: Australian Painters Photographed by R. Ian Lloyd. This exhibition includes large format portraits of 61 of Australia’s most acclaimed painters in their studio environments.
The University of the Sunshine Coast Art Gallery assistant curator, Lou Jaeger, said that it is fantastic to be able to engage the local community in this event, especially those who may not have visited the campus before, and to increase awareness of the gallery by working with local art groups.
“Visitors can develop a greater understanding of the nature of the University’s art collection and inspect sculptures and paintings on campus,” Mrs Jaeger said.
“The Art Market is a wonderful opportunity for people to talk to local artists and visit the brilliant exhibition currently showing in our gallery,” she said.
The event has been organised by a team of USC Public Relations students, with assistance from Art Gallery staff.
