One of Australia’s most dynamic and vibrant regional arts events, Crush Festival returns to the bountiful and breathtaking Bundaberg region for its eighth annual celebration of the region’s thriving arts scene from 7–16 October.
Over 10 days, the 2016 festival offers locals and visiting tourists the opportunity to explore a range of innovative arts projects and performances showcasing Bundaberg’s emerging and established artists, alongside internationally renowned performances such as Circa.
Only a four-hour drive from Brisbane, a three-hour drive from the Sunshine Coast, and a two-hour drive from Gladstone, and one of the gems of the Southern Great Barrier Reef, Bundaberg’s Crush Festival is set to attract visitors from across Queensland. With its mouth-watering local produce markets and interactive creative experiences including street art, colourful circus, cabaret, film, music, writing, sculpture and art exhibitions and a range of workshops, the festival offers something for everyone.
Crush Festival will kick off with a jam-packed weekend of immersive cultural events and two high-flying circus performances.
On Friday 7 October the festival will launch in style with Crush@Riverfeast, a sea of lanterns, music, markets and live performances including a traditional Indigenous welcome by students from Bundaberg North State High School.
WriteFest will kick-start the opening weekend with workshops for avid readers and passionate local writers who can learn trade tips and tricks from successful Australian authors including the Surfing Scientist Ruben Meerman.
Circa Crush, a year-long development program that engages budding local circus performers, will present a performance on Saturday afternoon that showcases the beautiful environment of the region through the art of circus, with the internationally renowned Circa Zoo ensemble.
On Sunday 9 October, Circa will present the surreal and unexpectedly moving Beyond, a blend of traditional and dynamic circus acts set to a bewitching mix of modern show tunes and electronica. Directed by Yaron Lifschitz, Circa is an ensemble of multi-skilled circus artists whose award-winning works have been seen in 34 countries across six continents.
The 10-day festival offers something for everyone, with events ranging from Sand Sculptures on the beach of Mon Repos Conservation Park to Spirit of Bundaberg, a rum-inspired festival packed with food, beverages and live music. The diverse range of activities and events makes Crush Festival the perfect getaway for the whole family.
