Crust Examining artists' approaches to clay surfaces
Noosa Regional Gallery 14 July - 13 August 2006 Opening : Friday 14 July 6pm
Crust is an exhibition of 38 ceramics which excite and fascinate. All the works have been drawn from the permanent collection of the Gold Coast City Art Gallery and they all reveal a different approach to the creation of surface. That surface may be smooth, almost liquid-like to touch, Greg Daly's Quad Vase, or built up in feather light paper-thin layers - Swiss artist Florence Rometsch Paperlike 2. Some effects are the result of well-judged accidents - Owen Rye's Wood-fired Form and others are a careful reinterpretation of ancient processes such as Avi Amesbury's Passages and the use of celadon glaze on her slip cast porcelain forms. From pinch pots to Computer Aided Design, functional to sculptural, the tradition of making objects from clay engages the mind and records our histories in an ongoing evolution.
The exhibition will appeal to both specialist and those unfamiliar with ceramics each work is accompanied by detailed descriptions of the making process involved and additional general information about making ceramics describes those unfamiliar terms that once explained can enhance our understanding of the way a work is made.
