For C.W. STONEKING the road continues to call and, following successful solo dates across the USA and through New Zealand earlier this year, C.W is returning to local stages for a limited series of solo performances. We're thrilled he'll be taking to the stage in The Brewery at The Imperial Hotel Eumundi on Saturday 11 May. He'll be supported by the fabulous RUBY GILBERT.

C.W. STONEKING

It’s probably easiest to describe C.W. Stoneking as a ‘blues artist,’ but the term disguises what makes his music special. There’s so much in there. A 1920s pre-war blues sound is key, but there’s almost equal helpings of New Orleans jazz, jug band music, hokum, country and calypso, and he’s lately brought in elements of jump jive, early rock’n’roll and gospel. His gift is that he brings them all together without anything sounding out of place. He finds the strands that connect all of these different styles and gently braids them together.

It’s what he values more than anything: “It’s getting everything to unify really. The music, the flow of it, keeping it moving, with no dead spots. Then I guess having the lyrics and the meaning that flows in that too, you know? Getting it all to knit together in a way that, if you didn’t speak English maybe, you’d still be able to feel the melody, or the sounds of the words. If you did, then the meaning would also flow. That’s sort of what I’m trying to do, I guess.”

When so many on the blues scene are trying to sound ‘authentic’ – whatever that is – it’s that unity of sound that allows Stoneking to actually achieve it, and with apparent ease, too. Back in the day, no-one was ‘just’ a blues musician, or a jazz or country musician, and so neither is he.

Stoneking’s work can never really be second-guessed; you never know what you’re going to get. After charming his audiences with acoustic parlour guitars, National resonators, tenor banjos and a band laden with brass on his first two albums King Hokum and Jungle Blues, he dropped all of that to go electric on the 2014 ARIA award winning Gon’ Boogaloo. Each album is as different from the other as the diverse strands of music that inspire him.

Storytelling is one of his most potent powers. He truly knows how to spin a yarn. His songs are similarly irreverent and fantastical with tales of talking animals, hoodoo gone wrong and a myriad of characters in unfortunate situations in locations from jai to the jungle to heaven itself. Almost all of his work is drenched in that humour, whether it be sly innuendo, ridiculous sitcom or his particular knack for extended conversations between fictional friends – the man holds a whole pantheon of personalities under his stylish fedora and slicked-back hair.

Rumour has it C.W. Stoneking has been busy crafting songs for his next full length album, his first since Gon’ Boogaloo.

Fans joining him for the Eumundi gig can expect songs old and new, favourites performed as never heard before and perhaps a few surprises too.

RUBY GILBERT

Ruby Gilbert embraces a moody, gothic-tinged style of writing. The Queensland Music Award-nominated songstress’ style is inspired by the grittiness of Johnny Cash, whilst channelling a timeless and stylised atmosphere. Her left-of-centre phrasing is unexpected and speaks brutally honest truths. Raw and heart-breaking, her voice evokes an old-time feel, while her lyrics are both strange and endearing.

In 2018, she released her highly anticipated debut EP Dearly Beloved.

Her powerful performance style has seen her featured at festivals around Australia, including the Bigsound, Groundwater Country Music Festival, Caloundra Music Festival, Tamworth Country Music Festival, the Gympie Music Muster, Little Bigsound, Dashville Skyline and The Gumball.
