Award-winning jazz vocalist Ingrid James will feature as special guest with the David Bentley Trio for the Imperial Jazz Club on Saturday 3 June. Ingrid returns after a sell-out show at the hotel earlier this year.
Internationally acclaimed for her sultry sound and impeccable phrasing, Ingrid became well known on the Sunshine Coast for her appearances at Noosa International Jazz Festival where she stole the show every year from 2001 through to 2015. Ingrid's vocal stylings have also sent overseas music writers into raptures.
Steve Robertson, of the Portland Observer, marvels at her "note perfect delivery and depth of lyrical expression". USA Jazz radio presenter Mark Shannon describes Ingrid's style as "mouthwatering...hitting each note with pristine clarity" Pete Churchill, professor jazz composition at London's Royal Academy of Music enthuses about her interpretations of "songs of love, loss and longing". John Hardaker from Words About Music describes Ingrid's stylings as occupying "the right point between the hip and the sweet".
With 11 highly praised jazz albums, and successful gigs at Ronnie Scott's Club in London and many other European venues, Ingrid could be forgiven for resting on her laurels. Instead, she continues to develop her vocal artistry while extending a helping hand to aspiring singers.
A graduate of both the Queensland Conservatorium and the Australian Film, Television and Radio School in Sydney, Ingrid founded Brisbane's famous (and ongoing) Jazz Singers' Jam Night at Brisbane Jazz Club where literally hundreds of intending singers have found the opportunity to test and hone their performance skills in a "live" context.
In Eumundi that stage will be shared with Imperial Jazz Club resident group DB3 - David Bentley (piano), Andrew Shaw (acoustic bass) and Nathan Goldman (percussion). David Bentley is an award winning jazz/blues pianist. His jazz trio has backed many jazz luminaries including vibraphonist Milt Jackson, saxophonist Phil Woods and vocalist Mark Murphy. As a songwriter, David is best-known for In A Broken Dream - a hit for his R&B group Python Lee Jackson (Rod Stewart on vocals).
The same track recently re-entered the charts as a remix, retitled Everyday, for Harlem rapper A$AP Rocky. Andrew Shaw is Brisbane's premier bassist and also accompanist for touring artists including US jazz saxophonist Dave Liebman and guitarist John Scofield. Shaw performs in a diverse range of music from jazz to world music and classical. Nathan Goldman is a swinging jazz drummer whose style defies easy categorisation.
Prominent in the Brisbane jazz scene for the past 15 years, Nathan has performed with renowned interstate and overseas touring artists including Dale Barlow, Matthew Jodrell, James Sherlock and Hetty Kate as well as with Brisbane-based lineups including the West End Composer's Collective, Abbreviations Orchestra and the Enthusiastic Musicians Orchestra (EMO).
