Kent Smith is the artistic conjuror who turned a box of Crayolas received at an early age into the most beautiful art deco paintings ever seen on the Sunshine Coast. Kent describes the smell and fragrance of the gift received from his mother as “Quite Intoxicating!” His beautiful paintings can be seen at the Harbourside Gallery, Noosa Marina, Tewantin, from the 1st until 29th October.
Kent’s work sends a note of nostalgia for the period of our forebears, during the early 20th century, delineated by the enjoyment of the finer things in life in what is known as the Art Deco and Art Nouveau period. His work depicts subjects in surreal and fantastic ways, intricately detailed and gloriously coloured in the richest and boldest of hues.
Kent’s background is as an architectural graphic artist. He has directed design teams of architects, landscape architects and planners on various recreational and urban renewal projects in the USA and in Melbourne. His work is renowned throughout various communities in Victoria.
Kent’s philosophy suggests that drawing should preceed painting. He believes that the rules of art should be learned; namely those of “exploring proportion, constructing a perspective, learning the ‘behaviours’ of various materials”. Kent’s Art Deco canvases will be complemented with some of his later works.
