What happens when you take a painter, a filmmaker, a photographer and a sculptor, and send them to a remote location on the edge of the desert to make art? A documentary about the expedition and a story of the outback; a series of assemblages and paintings; organic, contemporary sculpture and a collection of photographs and etchings that depict the life of a woman living in the Great Stony Desert.
This expedition was no joyride; there were no cooks, air-conditioned trailers and champagne. (Well, maybe a little red wine). Taking all of their own supplies for living rough for two weeks including their water, four women artists set out to discover what they could make from this experience. Dirt, as the title of the exhibition suggests, was an ever present, pervasive and inescapable fact of life!
The area they explored on this expedition includes some of the harshest and most beautiful to be found in Western Queensland, and the rich history of the area provides a fascinating insight into the lives of the people who pioneered this country.
Focusing on the life of a particular family, the four artists fully explore their diverse mediums to produce an insightful and poignant translation of a story worth telling. These works combine to make a fascinating account of the journey these four artists undertook.
