Doing Dads Proud - 2010
"Doing Dads Proud" will take place at Cotton Tree Park on Father's Day, Sunday September 5th, 2010.
With 10 years of experience under its belt, Lifeline Community Care Sunshine Coast's annual Father's Day celebration "Doing Dads Proud" is now the biggest Father's Day event in South-East Queensland.
"Doing Dads Proud" is a multi award winning event, winning the 2003, 2005 and 2006 Australia Day Awards for Best Community Event and the Fisher Community Australia Day Award for 2004.
The event program runs from 10.00am to 4.00pm and this year will focus on the very topical issue of Suicide prevention, a service we provide on regular basis through our 24/7 telephone counselling service.
Given the recent publication of The Community Affairs References Committee's Report "The Hidden Toll: Suicide in Australia", and the fact that Lifeline has been mentioned in the report as the main general public suicide prevention organisation; we feel Lifeline is now in a position of strength to create awareness in the community through "Doing Dads Proud 2010".
"Doing Dads Proud" will therefore be serving a very significant purpose to build the capacity of the community of the Sunshine Coast to deal with the issue of suicide intervention, in the hope that increased public attention and support for suicide prevention can reduce the damage it causes.
The costs for individuals, families and communities affected by suicide cannot be measured but are clearly enormous. The financial cost of suicide is likely to be measured in the billions every year as the number of suicides in Australia has been underreported in comparison with other causes of death in Australia.
In summary, "Doing Dads Proud" will assist Lifeline to develop community awareness of suicide and the need to contribute to a long term awareness campaign with responsible regular reporting to the media.
The event will provide free entertainment to the community with free access to the swimming pool. This year Cotton Tree park should host, 2 jumping castles, three bigger rides, giant board games and a variety of food and performing acts to entertain the crowd; this is not to mention all the activities organised by Swim Fit and the presence of a number of community organisations and boys toys.
"Doing Dads Proud" is an alcohol/drug free non-profit event produced by Lifeline Sunshine Coast, and is proudly sponsored by HOT91, Maroochy RSL, Lend Lease Pty Ltd, Ray Mazoletti Interiors and Channel Seven Sunshine Coast.
