doublebind - kunst kinder karriere - art children career
A major exhibition of contemporary photography, video and installation exploring the plight of female artists faced with a double life. That of their art, plus child bearing and rearing. And for many, also the need to have an income producing career.
Curated by German artist Signe Theill this exhibition comes direct to Noosa Regional Gallery from Berlin. doublebind has been brought to Noosa by generous sponsorship from The Berlin Council for Science, Research and the Arts, Haupt Stadt Kulter Fonds and The Institut fur Auslandsbeziehungen e.V.
Noosa Regional Gallery will be the only Gallery in Australia to show this thought provoking display of work from fifteen female artists from Germany, France, the United States, Canada and Hungary. These artists in their different mediums depict the timeless topic of the challenge of motherhood and career.
The road to success for most artists is usually a long and hard one and for women artists even more difficult given that they are the child bearing members of our family. This has almost always been the case - where were the female counterparts of Van Gogh, Vermeer, Da Vinci, Goya, Matisse, Picasso? Perhaps child birth and child rearing explains their absence?
Since the 1970's women have taken society's definition of motherhood and made it a theme of their art, with work from the 90's onward focusing on the specifics of working mothers everyday lives.
Curator, Signe Theill spent three years working on this exhibition with her selected artists and during this time spent many hours interviewing those taking part. These interviews will be shown during the exhibition.
The exhibition opens at Noosa Regional Gallery on August 12 and continues until Sept. 4
Associated events during the exhibition will be a morning coffee meeting at the Gallery with women artists to discuss their own experiences of Art Children Career, and a Family Art Making Day on August l4 together with a talk by curator, Signe Theill.
