Kids DTC create theatre in the lab

The DTC (Drama Technology Crew) invites members of the public to view their original performance from the ‘drama techno lab’ this Saturday November 30 from 7pm at Kandanga Hall.

The pioneering project that’s bringing together theatre and state of the art technology sees 18 kids aged 9 to 13 years of age embrace everything from mobile phone technology through to 3D live motion capture. Projects include simple stop motion animation and short films aimed at creating a world of illusion. 3 Dimensional Augment Reality fuses imagination, iPads and the latest in Application design.
The project is ground-breaking as it is attempting to use technology in a way that it was not intended. This has led to all sorts of discoveries and opportunities for young people to interact with the technology, without just being passive users. The group have woven their experiments together with theatrical techniques in order to share their process of discovery.

For two of the workshop coordinators Tony Kishawi and John Haag the project offered a reunion. Back in the eighties and nineties Tony and John worked together as a theatrical duo, performing in schools, festivals and venues across much of Australia. Their last tour together was Japan, in 1998. By coincidence their paths then both led to the world of technology. Working with technicians in Brisbane Tony developed his digital theatre production, “Technomimological” which toured up and down the east coast of Australia. Meanwhile John began studying animation and 3D motion capture, working towards his first live animation production, “A Brush with the Real World”.

Excited to be working together again Tony commented, “The project itself has been an adventure into an area few people are working on, giving kids the opportunity to explore anything from the simple smart phone through to high end 3D motion capture in a way that gets them away from the computer, and opens them to new possibilities for live performance of the future.”

Tickets are $10 for Adults and free for kids.
