Local Kiwis band together to raise much needed funds for Christchurch
Three Sunshine Coast business women will this month join forces to create a Kiwi inspired fundraising luncheon 'E Hoa!' meaning 'Hey Friend!' for victims of the Christchurch Earthquake.
Nyssa Berryman of The Buzz PR, Yvette Adams of The Creative Collective, and Anna Day of newly formed organisation KEA Noosa (a regional chapter for the global organisation Kiwi Expatriates Association) and all New Zealand expats, are looking to raise money for their home country which was left devastated after a 6.3 magnitude earthquake rattled South Island city, Christchurch just two weeks ago.
All three have family and friends in the recovering city, who have thankfully only lost possessions - not people. However with the death toll recently hitting 160 and feared to settle around 240, the trio say they felt compelled to rally the Sunshine Coast's massive Kiwi expat contingent as well as those with Kiwi connections, to dig deep and help out friends 'across the ditch.'
"Australia and New Zealand have had a long history of mateship and we wanted to ensure this event was a representation of that," said Berryman.
"It's the least we can do with our skills and contacts - to put on a great event with a Kiwi inspired menu, New Zealand wines and amazing entertainment as well as one off auction items and memorabilia to raise much needed funds."
Adams has felt the horrific aftermath close to home, "I have been speaking to friends who jumped in the car with three kids when the city started shaking and who drove 4 hours north and who haven't been back; friends who have relocated to Auckland because their work places, homes and cars are destroyed and friends who are living off camp gas ovens and digging holes to go to the toilet. They are all doing it very tough," she says.
"I hope whatever we can contribute is a small comfort to those who have lost so much. We just want them to know that we care and are doing all we can to make their lives that little bit easier."
The event which has been officially registered with the Australian Red Cross, will see all money raised go directly to the rehabilitation of the city which New Zealand Prime Minister John Key reported could take up to 15 years to fully rebuild. Even the CBD which took most of the jolt he warned, could be closed until Christmas.
The event will take place on Friday 8 April at the Maroochydore Surf Club. Doors open 12:30pm for a 1pm start. To purchase tickets for 'E Hoa' (Hey Friend!) visit http://kiwiquakelunch.eventbrite.com/. For more information call (07) 5478 2867 or 0405 0478 020.
