Nigel Spork, Ernst & Young's 2010 Northern Region Entrepreneur Of The Year in the Products category, has an inspiring story to tell about how he turned his family business, Centor, around through product innovation and international expansion.
Centor invented the technology that allowed bifolding doors to be used externally for the first time, revolutionising the Queensland lifestyle by opening up homes and bringing the outside in.
Facing financial distress in 1997, Managing Director Nigel Spork has turned his 60 year old family business into a growing world-wide leader in window and door systems -- now employing around 145 people with global locations in UK, USA and China and plans to expand across North America and Europe.
Nigel's push for innovation to become the heart and soul of his business has seen Centor achieve phenomenal success and receive numerous awards including 2008 Telstra Queensland Business of the Year, 2008 AMP National Innovation Award and the Global Star award at the 2009 Queensland 400 Business Awards.
Nigel's R&D team is the largest of any company in the Australian window industry, with 22 patents. Centor's latest product, the F3 floor rolling system, has enabled folding doors to be sold by Home Depot, the world's largest DIY chain, introducing folding doors to a much wider audience.
Centor's world-first product innovations including its SE1 Eco-Screen solar control blind to manage heat gain in summer, loss during winter and control insects allow people worldwide to enjoy an Australian outdoor lifestyle.
The Eco-Screen is an excellent example of Centor's research and development achievements in building design and materials to reduce carbon emissions.
The Clean Futures 2010 Conference is a practical two-day conference for entrepreneurs in Cleantech sectors of building design and materials, solar, water, energy and waste management. For more information visit www.innovation-centre.com.au/cleanfutures
