Etchells Australian Winter Championship 2005
Mooloolaba Yacht Club
Australia's best sailors will be returning to Moolololaba over the June long weekend to contest the 2005 Etchells Australian Winter Championship. For many of those sailors they have been making the trek to Mooloolaba for eight years to pursue their dream of taking out one of Australia's most prestigious trophies.
The Etchells fleet traditionally attracts top level sailors to compete in the one-design class with crews of three. There is little difference between the boats to look at. The difference is in the people who through crew work and smart tactics make their boat sail to their maximum speed.
Over 40 crews from NSW, Victoria, West Australia, Tasmania, Queensland and New Zealand will line up for the eight race series to be contested off Mooloolaba from Friday 10 to Monday 13 June.
America's Cup, Olympic classes and blue water racers will be all represented within the fleet including John Bertrand who finished second in 2004 and will be looking to better that result this year. Previous World and National Champion Cameron Miles will be competing again this year also looking to better his second place at the 2004 Mooloolaba Worlds.
The Sunshine Coast will be represented by seven members of the local Mooloolaba Etchells fleet which will include skippers MYC Commodore Ken Down, Rod Jones, Geoff Dews, Greg Kildey, Bucky Smith, Michael Bennett and Trevor Martin.
The Mooloolaba Yacht Club will be open for business as usual and locals are encouraged to come visit the Club and be part of the great event.
