A new exhibition at Discover Eumundi Heritage and Visitor Centre is bound to appeal to those with an interest in Eumundi's history and a love and respect for beer. That's right. Beer.
The exhibition is titled 'Eumundi's Pubs - Free Beer Tomorrow' and it traces the life of Eumundi's pubs and breweries, as well as the colourful characters that have worked within the pubs and those that have enjoyed a beer or two at the bar.
Manager of Discover Eumundi Wendy Birrell says the exhibition drills down into the history of both Joe's Waterhole and The Imperial Hotel.
"We've looked at everything since the initial building of the town's two hotels, including the fires that destroyed both buildings, and their subsequent rebuilding," she says. "The rebuilding of the pubs from local timber was remarkably quick - such is the love for the public house!"
Wendy highlights a 1927 advertisement in The Guardian for the newly rebuilt Imperial Hotel advertised the first class accommodation, garage, stabling facilities and best meals on the north coast as well as 'Popular Dining Room. All Liquors true to label. Handy to Station. Phone 10'.
"It's interesting to note that Joe's Waterhole hasn't always been 'Joe's'. It started off as the Railway Hotel, then become the Eumundi Hotel, then the Commercial Hotel, and finally Joe's Waterhole in 1987 - after well-known and successful boxer Joe Whiting, who was the publican at the time. Joe used the phrase 'Free Beer Tomorrow' in all his promotions.
"Many people will also recall the days of the Eumundi Brewery Group at the Imperial Hotel and the birth of Eumundi Lager - a beer that won a number of awards, and helped further cement Eumundi as a town with fabulous pubs.
Wendy says the memorabilia on display includes old photographs and anecdotes, beer bottles and merchandise, as well as advertisements and signage.
The 'Eumundi's Pubs - Free Beer Tomorrow' exhibition opens Thursday 26 June at 4pm, and is located in the old police cells at the back of Discover Eumundi, which have been converted into an exhibition space.
This exhibition will form part of the Eumundi Food Fest on Sunday 13 July and will continue in Discover Eumundi until September. To attend the opening, please telephone 5442 8762.
