Eumundi’s School of Arts Hall is celebrating its 100th Birthday on Thursday 15 November 2012 with a re-enactment of the 1912 opening ceremony and a Centenary Ball.
When it opened on November 15, 1912, The School of Arts building was considered one of the finest buildings on the Sunshine Coast. Originally two stories, it had a library and billiards hall on the lower level. Over its 100 year history, it has hosted many activities inside its walls including card nights, indoor bowls, badminton, roller skating and debutante balls.
It is still in constant use today, with the Independent theatre of Eumundi using it as a base, along with activities including kung fu, yoga, indoor bowls, dance classes, and various community meetings.
Manager of Discover Eumundi Heritage and Visitor Centre Wendy Birrell says the re-enactment on Thursday 15 November will include a procession on part of Eumundi’s main street, Memorial Drive, and a theatre style re-enactment of the 1912 opening. The event will involve local primary school children and past and present users of the hall.
“We hope to recapture the real essence of 1912,” says Wendy. “We want as many people as possible to dress-up and come along to help us celebrate this once in 100 years event”.
The Centenary Ball on Friday 16 November will be held in the School of Arts hall and will be a night that showcases the history of the 100-year-old building and celebrates its ongoing place in Eumundi.
“Dust off your glad rags or come dressed in your favourite era from 1912 on,” says Wendy. “There will be great live music with the Sunshine Swing Band, as well as lucky door and best dressed prizes. The ticket price includes your first drink and supper from some of Eumundi’s finest foodies.”
“The ball will be a night when we can kick our heels up and celebrate its special place in our community.”
Profits from the Ball will go towards the ongoing maintenance of this wholly community run building. “Many of the halls in our region are around 100 years old and maintenance of these wooden buildings is very expensive. Please support this event so we can see this fabulous hall remain part of our community for many more years,” says Wendy.
