Sunshine Coast residents can enjoy a trip down memory lane when two nostalgic exhibitions open at the University of the Sunshine Coast Gallery on Thursday 12 June at 6.30pm.
The first exhibition, Fibro Coast, considers the changing landscapes of the Gold and Sunshine coasts over the years through historical paintings, architectural information, photographs and contemporary artwork.
USC Gallery Curator Dawn Oelrich said the exhibition was developed through a collaboration of Gold Coast City Art Gallery, independent curator John Waldron and the USC Gallery.
“Fibro Coast traces the changes from a once strictly beach cottage and holiday destination to the thriving cities that are now the Gold and Sunshine coasts,” she said.
“While there are similarities in the development, each coast has a distinct personality and this exhibition presents photographs, historical paintings and contemporary artist’s observations of that change.”
Ms Oelrich said the exhibition featured works by Judy Barrass, Susan Schmidt, Alan Hill and Kelly Hussey-Smith, Anna Carey, Bruce Reynolds, Corrie Wright, Blair McNamara and others.
“The exhibition will give visitors an opportunity to re-engage with the cultural, artistic, architectural and design legacy of the beach cottage. John Waldron has created a terrific public program that is available on the USC website.”
Minister for National Parks, Recreation, Sport & Racing and Member for Buderim Steve Dickson will officially open the exhibition, which is supported by the Queensland Government through the Regional Galleries Partnership Program.
Former USC Vice-Chancellor Emeritus Professor Paul Thomas AM will officially open the second exhibition, Photographs & Memories, on the same evening.
This features a series of pictures and posters to celebrate the 10th birthday of the USC Gallery in its current location. It will highlight the dedication of the gallery volunteers as it journals the stories, work, laughter and fun of the past 10 years.
Media and the public are welcome to attend the opening celebrations for the exhibitions, which will continue at the USC Gallery until Saturday 16 August.
The gallery is located at the University campus on Sippy Downs Drive, Sippy Downs.
It is open free to the public from 10am to 4pm Monday to Saturday and closed Sundays and public holidays. Visit http://www.fibrocoast.net/ for more information.
