First night for Last Crush
A capacity house is expected at the Nambour Civic Centre Theatre this Wednesday, 17 March, when the "Last Crush", a documentary film on Moreton Sugar Mill's last crushing season, is premiered.
The Governor of Queensland, Her Excellency Ms Quentin Bryce, AC will officially launch the 40 minute film which serves not only as a fitting tribute to the end of an agricultural era but also as a legacy of the local cane industry community.
Documenting technical elements including the cane harvest, the rail and road transport and the Mill crush as well as featuring the human face of the cane industry, this film is the culmination of more than six months intensive effort by Maroochy Libraries in partnership with the University of the Sunshine Coast, Bundaberg Sugar and Canegrowers Moreton Area.
Maroochy Shire Mayor, Cr Alison Grosse, said the "Last Crush" objectively, professionally and sensitively records an event of great historic, cultural and economic significance not only for Maroochy Shire, but also for the whole of Queensland.
"The film also poignantly relates the story of a region faced with a changed future.
"By capturing these events on film, we have a comprehensive record of the impact the sugar industry has had on the character, the history and, indeed, the future of our Shire," Cr Grosse said.
Funded by a State Library of Queensland Innovation Grant, the Last Crush project also incorporates an informative web site at www.maroochylibraries.qld.gov.au/sugarcane and an oral and photographic record of the events of the last crush.
The DVD will be on sale through Maroochy Libraries for $10.00 from 18 March and, for further information, please contact the Local Studies Section on 5441 8332.
