Kids of all ages attending the Caloundra Fringe Festival will be able to ‘go fly a kite’ – courtesy of the Currimundi Catchment Care Group.

At Happy Valley on Sunday 23 September, kids will be able to paint kites with an environmental theme, and then fly them along the beach.

President of the Currimundi Catchment Care Group, Tony Moorhead, said this initiative is part of the Group’s anti-litter message.  “We are just reminding people that kites are a great alternative to balloons for outdoor functions.  Kites are a lot of fun, and you get to take them home to fly later, whereas balloons can escape and enter our waterways.  After they burst they are often mistaken for food and eaten by fish or turtles causing damage and even death.  Strings and ribbons attached to balloons are also dangerous because they can become twisted around the legs of waterbirds.”

“It’s a great way for kids and their parents to learn more about how to preserve our natural environment and the native wildlife.  And that’s what attracts people to live here in the first place.”
