Former State of Origin Players to join Caloundra RSL Falcons training at Quad Park
Greg Oliphant, Gary Belcher, Dale Shearer and Kerrod Walters will be heading to Quad Park next Wednesday August 9th to join the Caloundra RSL Falcons in their training session.
These legends will be on hand to lend their support to the Falcons whilst they host one of the last training sessions before heading into the finals.
The Sunshine Coast Community is encouraged to head to Quad Park Wednesday 9th August at 6.30pm to see the Falcons in action and meet some of these great legends of league.
Queensland's first State of Origin halfback, Oliphant was known as a dogged competitor who played out his Brisbane career with West's and Redcliffe. Although he only played the one Origin game, he had already represented the Maroons six times previous under the old interstate format. His international career was limited to two Tests for Australia, as he duelled with Tommy Raudonikis each year for selection.
The competitiveness between the two was a long-running feature of interstate matches, extending from an on-field punch-up in 1977 and including an organized charity fight in 1980
Played with South's Magpies in the 1984 and 1985 Brisbane Rugby League Grand Finals. An explosive runner of the ball, most dangerous in open play at fullback, but could also play wing. Had a fantastic step and swerve, and formed terrific partnerships with Mal Meninga. Was strong in defence, almost dominating. Headed to Canberra in 1986, winning premierships in the NSWRL with the Raiders in 1989 and 1990. Took over the Origin fullback position from Colin Scott and represented Queensland 16 times. For Australia he played in an unbroken run of 15 Test matches.
Originally from Sarina, near Mackay, Shearer was a try- scoring phenomenon with an impeccable attitude to fitness and preparation. He made his mark with the Manly Sea Eagles from 1985-1989, playing 86 matches and featuring in the club's
1987 premiership. He featured momentarily for English club Widnes before joining the Brisbane Broncos (25 games), Gold Coast (32 games), South Queensland (8 games), the Roosters (7
games) and the North Queensland Cowboys (13 games). He represented Queensland 21 times and still holds the record for most Origin tries with 12. Represented Australia in 20 Test matches.
Youngest of the three Walters brothers who represented Australia, born 15 minutes after twin brother Kevin. Played over 200 games for the Brisbane Broncos and starred in grand final wins in 1992 and 1993. Had a stint with the Adelaide Rams in 1997 and 1998 and also played for English club Gateshead. All up he featured in six State of Origin matches for Queensland and eight Test matches for Australia. Played out the end of his career with the Toowoomba Clydesdales in the Queensland Wizard Cup.
