Hear from USC’s leading researchers as they share their insights and progress in health, sciences, engineering and educational research.
Research@USC is a series of free and informative talks designed for the Sunshine Coast community. Each event comprises two speakers, question and answer time, and the opportunity to meet researchers whilst enjoying light refreshments.
5.30 - 6pm Associate Professor Thomas Schlacher
Beaches and Undersea Volcanoes – Marine Ecology at the Extremes
Ours is the blue planet and Australia is an Island (slightly oversized though…), making the study of the oceans one of humankind’s erstwhile endeavours. In this seminar, Dr Schlacher will take you on brief ramble through two habitats that define much of the landscape of the Sunshine Coast above and below the water: sandy shores and seamounts. Contrary to popular belief, beaches are amazingly diverse and rich ecosystems (not just piles of sand) and submarine seamounts dwarf those little hills you see around Glasshouse.
6 - 6.30pm Dr David Schoeman
Like frogs in a pot, or not? Some thoughts on adapting to a changing climate.
Just as the effects of gravity are independent of a “belief” in their existence, the consequences of climate change are ignoring public and political squabbles, and are manifesting tangibly in the ecological systems on which society depends. Yet we need not feel impotent in the face of this challenge. In this seminar, Dr Schoeman will describe alternative ways in which we can think about its changing climate. He will explain that by conceptualising the pathways along which climates move, we could plan for future environmental change not only so that we can minimise its impacts, but also so that we can take advantage of new opportunities as they arise. We need not sit like frogs in a pot, becoming ever more gloomy as the water warms. With a little imagination, we could plan for our warmer future while at the same time pushing our public representatives to ensure that the water doesn’t boil.
