Ever wondered why some people seem to bounce off the walls, never sleep and don't gain weight no matter how much they eat; while you struggle to get going and find that you continue to gain weight even though you follow the strictest of diets? Perhaps it has something to do with your hormones!

It is estimated that 1 in 10 Australian women have a thyroid disorder and experience symptoms such as tiredness, hormonal imbalances or unexplained depression.  It is also common for these women to complain about weight gain and irritability - all things that can be linked to an under-active thyroid.  It is also common to experience dry skin and hair, poor memory and concentration or digestive problems when affected by a sluggish thyroid.  Many women can also experience infertility, menstrual abnormalities, loss of libido or headaches if their thyroid is not functioning well.

The thyroid gland is a gland that many people do not even know exists -- until it isn't working properly!  Your thyroid is a gland located in the front part of your neck which produces hormones needed for normal metabolism.  Hypothyroidism is a state of under-activity of the thyroid gland with a lowered production of thyroid hormone.  You can think of your thyroid hormones as the drums in a band.
