Auslan is the language of approximately 15,000 Deaf Australians. Statistics show one in every six Australians have some degree of hearing loss. Auslan is a visual language and growing in popularity.

Students of Honeybee Creations Auslan courses will learn:
•About deafness, Deaf Community and Culture; Visual-Gestural & Nonverbal Communication Tactics; & Auslan Vocabulary
•Conversation practice: learn how to communicate with deaf people in Auslan without voice
•Develop an appreciation for Auslan
•Access genuine Auslan with Deaf teachers
•Develop practical Auslan skills
•Learn through fun and informal classes
•Receive a good introduction before committing to accredited courses All participants will receive a certificate - a statement of attendance & colour print handouts.

Level 1 students will receive an educational & visually stunning Deaf Awareness book written by Lisa Mills. Level 1 & 2 courses are approved by University of the Sunshine Coast (USC) to be credited towards USC education students' wider field experience hours.

These courses are for people who:
•Want to be introduced to Auslan (Australian Sign Language) and Deaf Culture
•Want a short course at a relaxed pace
•Want to attend classes within their local area
•Are managers, employers, teachers, health professionals, friends & colleagues of deaf or hard-of-hearing people
•Are interested in working with deaf or hard-of-hearing people

Auslan in the Community –Level 1: Offers you the unique and fun experience of communicating visually using Auslan, the natural language of the Australian Deaf Community.

You will:
•Use basic communication skills in Auslan •Use visual-gestural & non-verbal communication strategies
•Identify the Deaf Community
•Explain effective ways of communicating with deaf or hard-of-hearing people
•Be introduced to fingerspelling patterns No pre-requisite.

Auslan in the Community – Level 2: Continues the unique and fun experience of communicating visually using Australian Sign Language (Auslan), the natural visualgestural language used by the Australian Deaf Community.

You will:
•Improve communication skills in Auslan
•Further develop visual-gestural & non-verbal communication strategies
•Extend your ability to adapt signs for use in different contexts
•Cover topics including occupations, directions, time, appointments, countries and more Prerequisite: Auslan in the Community – Level 1.
