Caloundra City to celebrate National Youth Week

Caloundra City's young people will be able to celebrate National Youth Week [9-17 April] in style with everything from 'Bollyweird' films and Indian cuisine to skateboarding and BMX competitions included in the line up of activities.

Caloundra City Mayor, Don Aldous, said National Youth Week (NYW) is the largest celebration of young people on the Australian youth calendar for 12 to 25 year-olds.

"National Youth Week provides an opportunity to celebrate and reinforce the valuable contribution that young people make to the development of our local communities and the nation," Cr Aldous said.

Council's Youth Activity Officer, Adam Lewczuk, said the big feature of this year's NYW celebrations is From Bollyweird with Love - an international film spectacular being screened at the Playhouse, Caloundra Cultural Centre on Friday April 15.

"If 'Bollywood' is the in thing, then 'Bollyweird' is a crazy, hilarious underground look at the films that make the Indian film industry great," Mr Lewczuk said.

"Indian films are always three hours long, but for this special screening we've combined eight of the weirdest titles into a two hour program that's shorter than a regular feature."

Trash Video's Andrew Leavold, who compiled and narrates the film spectacular, said viewers would be in for two hours of Hindi mayhem, Indian disco and more tacky musical numbers than Kamahl's had white robes.

Tickets can be pre-purchased for $10 or $18 including a curry buffet through the Caloundra Cultural Centre on 5491 4240.  Buffet starts at 6.30pm and the show starts at 7.30pm.

Caloundra City's young people can also get involved in a BMX Night Competition on Saturday April 16 or Skateboarding Night Competition on Sunday April 17.  Both events kick off at 5.30pm at the Caloundra Central Skate Park, Caloundra Aquatic Lifestyle Centre, Central Park Road, Caloundra.
