Gala Concert - celebrating musical youth
Sunshine Coast Youth Orchestra (SCYO) presents a Gala Concert at 7pm at Immanuel Lutheran College Worship Centre, off Wises Road, Maroochydore.
Our concert program celebrates SCYO's year, as musicians and performers in our String Orchestra, Wind Ensemble, Concert Orchestra and Senior String Orchestra. 137 musicians, aged between seven and 20, will perform a wide range of music, from the classics to contemporary music. SCYO's talented musicians audition for a place in the orchestra and come from all over the Sunshine Coast and Hinterland.
Under the guidance of conductors Clare Deady (Education Queensland instrumental music teacher), Dr Andrew Paszkowski (medical specialist and viola teacher) and Steven Lake (instrumental music teacher), the orchestra groups have developed a diverse and entertaining repertoire. You'll hear music including Celebration of Life, Carnival of the Animals, Themes from The Incredibles, Overture of the Wasps, Music from Gladiator, Finlandia, March of the Scaffolds from Symphony Fantastic, Prairie Song, Palladio, Vivaldi's Concerto for Two violins and String Orchestra, Mota Moas, Spy-time Rag, Valsetriste, Schindler's List and Frolicsome Finale.
Seven of SCYO's members will perform modern string music on the orchestra's electric string instruments. They have been working with local string teacher, Suzie Gosling-O'Day, to develop music especially for the Gala concert.
The concert program will also feature guest performers - the Mountain Creek State High School Stage Band conducted by Calvin Hunter. They will play a fun, energetic swing piece called Jumpin' Jack Jive, Van Morrison's Moondance and the sixties rock classic Light my fire.
For musicians considering auditioning in November for a place in SCYO's 2007 orchestra groups, this concert is a great opportunity to see an orchestra performance. Musicians up to the age of 23 can audition to play with SCYO.
SCYO's annual Gala concert showcases some of the coast's most talented young musicians. Come along and hear the beautiful music they have created this year - the Immanuel Church has brilliant acoustics and its comfortable, tiered seating ensures everyone has a great view of the orchestra.
