Gardens bloom on the edge of Blackall Range
Award-winning children's author Gary Crew and his wife Christine's country garden combines sweeping views with a display of magnolias, camellias and roses. The garden is open to the public as part of The Maleny Garden Club Inc. event Gardening on the Edge along the Blackall Range on Saturday 6 and Sunday 7 June, during the Queen's Birthday long weekend.
Set over .8094ha, this 12-year-old garden also features the sculptures of talented Maleny artist Jacqui Seckold, including her Mad Hatter's Tea Party. Keep an eye out for a waterfall and a fountain that keeps company with a statue of an old oriental fisherman. This garden will be one of six that are part of Gardening on the Edge organised by the Maleny Garden Club.
Event spokesperson Sue McCleary said the gardens, ranging in size from .0407ha to 2.02ha, would be open and most featured parkland settings with mature trees and carefully planned landscaping. "The gardens have something of interest for everyone including a great vegetable garden, visitors can chat with garden owners, or just relax and take in the breath-taking views," Sue said." This is a wonderful opportunity to visit some inspiring private gardens and see what can be achieved through a love of gardening." Four of the gardens have wheelchair access.
Tickets are $10 per person (under 18 free) including map and brochure, can be purchased at the Maleny Indoor Activity Centre adjacent to Maleny High School in Bunya Street from 9am to 4pm each day. The Centre has free admission for the duration of the event, and is bursting with homemade refreshments and lunches; plant stalls selling orchids, native violets, roses and more, a Camellia flower display and a pottery display.
Make a weekend of it and combine "Gardening on the Edge" with a visit to the Maleny Art Awards and Exhibition on display at St George's Anglican Church. This year the competition features 10 specific sections and the overall winner receives the $3000 St George's Award.
