Glossy Black Cockatoo

Residents are invited to join this year's Glossy Black Cockatoo Birding Day and help look out for one of the shire's most distinctive bird species.

One day per year volunteers come together across the hinterland and coastal areas to keep a watchful eye on our local glossy black cockatoos.

The Glossies, as they are known, are magnificent birds, with large powerful beaks and red tail feathers.

They have a distinctive cockatoo call and can be seen flying in pairs or groups of three or feeding on the seeds of 'sheoak' trees, also known as casuarina trees.

They are the smaller of the black cockatoos and are listed as a vulnerable species.

"Birding Day is an opportunity to take stock of our local glossy black cockatoos," says Cr Tony Wellington.

"Each year volunteers have provided valuable data and information to the Glossy Black Cockatoo Conservancy, an organisation committed to conservation of this species."

Glossy Black Cockatoo Birding Day is on Sunday, 3 May 2015.

Those keen to take part are invited to attend a training session at Noosa Council from 1pm-2pm on Friday, 24 April.

Keeping accurate records of the Glossies helps our understanding of how these birds live and move around the Noosa area.
