Gympie rally to boost support
QUEENSLAND Senator Andrew Bartlett will join the list of high profile speakers in Gympie on Wednesday night at the next Dam Busters Rally to help strengthen and unite the community in staying positively focused on no dam for Traveston Crossing.
Senator Bartlett is deputy leader of the Australian Democrats and has openly opposed the flawed plan to dam the Mary River.
Wednesday's rally at the The Pavilion at Gympie Showgrounds kicks off at 6:30pm for 7pm start and will give people in the region the opportunity to meet the dedicated team leading the fight against the dam - the Save the Mary River Coordinating Group.
Come along for your chance to learn what has been done so far; and to get a clearer understanding of the main reasons why the group is adamant that the proposal should not proceed.
In addition to Senator Bartlett, a number of prominent people including a Coalition representative from the Queensland Government will explain why they don't want to see the dam go ahead and what they plan to do to cause the demise of the proposal.
Executive committee member Kevin Ingersole said that from Day 1, the objective of the STMRCG had been "to cause the Beattie Government to overturn its flawed decision to build a dam at Traveston Crossing".
"That objective has not changed in any way, but we have received feedback that some residents are still unsure of the committee's commitment.
"On Wednesday night, people in the region have the opportunity to meet the dedicated team leading this initiative, and we believe that people who attend will go away with a clear understanding that the battle has only just begun."
Following the presentations, some of the guest speakers and committee members will form a panel for questions and answers; and at the close of the formal meeting, most of the committee members will be available for more questions and comments.
The committee is keen to obtain input from the general community and will welcome suggestions that contribute to the chances of overturning this flawed proposal.
A barbecue starting at 6:15pm has been arranged by the Kandanga State School P&C Association, who will also make soft drinks and tea and coffee available.
The group encourages people to bring along banners and signs opposing the dam on the night.
The Cooloola Shire Council has provided the Pavilion and facilities free of charge for the rally.
