Just the mention of the word gold conjures up images of bearded men with gold pans of swirling water who are hoping for that unmistakable glitter at the bottom of the pan. Goldpanning was an essential stage of the gold separation process of the first miners on the Gympie diggings. Today Goldpanning Championships take the form of a man made wash area set up with tanks.  Each contestant in the various heats is given a 15-kilogram bucket of washed gravel with between 5 and 12 flakes of gold disbursed throughout.  The idea is to pan off the gravel without losing any pieces of gold. Experts are on hand and are able to teach people of all ages how to pan and remember you get to keep all the gold you find in the competition.

For those who have never tried panning for gold, this is an opportunity to take a lesson, practice in the panning tanks, and then come and join the fun.  Remember you keep all the gold you find in the panning competition. The gold is real!

All catagory winners and place-getters will be awarded prizes.

Queensland Goldpanning Championships

The sixth annualQueensland Goldpanning Championships will be held during Gold Rush 2004 Festival on Saturday 16th October at Nelson Reserve, Gympie.

Goldpanning was an essential stage of the gold separation process of the first miners on the Gympie diggings.

Goldpanning Championships take the form of a man made wash area set up with tanks.  Each contestant in the various heats is given a 15 kilogram bucket of washed gravel with between 5 and 12 flakes of gold disbursed throughout.  The idea is to pan off the gravel without losing any pieces of gold.  Penalties apply for every piece of gold that is not found.

The main philosophy of competition goldpanning is to keep the traditional art of goldpanning alive.

Goldpanning is seen as a family orientated activity in which anyone can compete.  Catagories include skilled men, skilled ladies, juniors (under 16 years), veterans (60 years and over), beginners (never competed before), open, team event and fun events at which the organisers produce their own rules.

You get to keep all of the gold that you find in the competition - and the gold is real.

For those who have never tried panning for gold, this is an oppurtunity to take a lesson, practice in the panning tanks, and then come and join the fun.

All catagory winners and place-getters will be awarded prizes
