Suncoast Repertory Theatre Inc and theatre s present
By Noël Coward
Mrs Judith Bliss cordially invites you to share in her family's company this week-end at their rural retreat at Cookham.
It is all boding very well for aficionados of quality theatre with the season of Noël Coward's Hay Fever imminently looming over the horizon. However the icing on the cake is that this is a joint production between the coasts two leading theatre ensembles - Suncoast Repertory Theatre Inc and theatre s.
One of the immediate benefits from this natural liaison is that Simon Denver of SRT will be the artistic director for this project and Stephen Moore from theatre s will be the producer. Even though they have known and worked together off and on for the last sixteen years this is the first time that they will have officially worked together in this capacity. Simon has been a busy boy of late with: Bullshot Crummond; Macbeth; Popcorn; Sleuth; & Don's Party as a few of his credits. He has wanted to direct a Coward play for years and like most of his projects he tends to wait until he has the right cast available rather then put a production on with a wrong cast. "In the end," Mr Denver said, "all theatre comes down to a single moment - and that is the casting. If you do it right then the cast will bring 95% of the show with them to the first rehearsal. Such is the case with Hay Fever; the cast are so good I've been almost relegated from Director to Polisher".
Since forming theatre s in 2001 as an actors co-operative, originally touring one-act plays to restaurants and butter factories before moving onto full-length plays, Stephen has produced such hits as: Shirley Valentine; Oleanna (for the Noosa Longweekend 2003); Steaming; Frank Annie's Diary; Keep Everything You Love; King of the Ice Cream Mountain; The Love List; and Cosi. "Combining with Simon's boundless creative energy and the SRT coterie of actors is such a positive step forward for theatre s," stated Stephen.
So, when such forces as this come together the ultimate beneficiary can only be the audience. For a shining glimpse into a golden age - come and see Hay Fever.

More about 'Hay Fever'...
Director Simon Denver said, "I once read a critique on Mozart; in its summary it concluded that Mozart's music was more complex and demanding then it sounded. I suppose that Mozart's theatrical counterpoint was Noël Coward, who when his plays are performed correctly seem as effortless as a summer breeze." And therein lays the rub! That sublime "glide" of Coward performed correctly is a genre unto itself. Not every performer can crack it. I suppose his plays are like his golden rules of theatre, which are;
Learn your lines
Don't fumble with the props
And for god's sake don't fall off the stage.
It all sounds so basic and easy. Well, from my personal experience I have worked with too many people who haven't learnt their lines, or have certainly not spoken clearly, or developed a preoccupation with their props and finally - I have watched five people fall of stage! And three of them were professional. One even managed to fall off stage after drying up, mumbling and fumbling!! I suppose what I'm trying to say is that this genre is for performers who truly honour their craft and not only know the rules but apply them. The cast, (Joy Marshall, Chris Surplice, Ruby Drewery, Howard Tampling, Stephen Moore, James Crowther, Rachel Fentiman & Fiona James) are such performers. When you see this production you will love it. The style, the wit, the effortless glide…but the next morning, as you reminisce upon the performance, over your coffee, please spare a thought for the collective years of incredibly hard work it has taken by the cast to give you something that appears as effortless style.
