The Event

The fourth annual Health Foundation Row for Cancer on the 5th September 2009 will continue to raise funds to support local cancer patients.

Combining sun, sand and the beautiful Maroochy River the event draws hundreds of competitors from as far away as Townsville to compete in surf boat, outrigger, ski and nipper races for impressive prize money ... and a cause that touches us all.

While the Maroochy River will be full of competitors the corporate sponsors will experience one of Sunshine Coasts outstanding restaurants where the food is as fresh and exquisite as the location. Enjoy the day kicking back while supporting local cancer patients and their families on the Sunshine Coast.

The Cause

Proceeds from this year's Health Foundation Row for Cancer will continue to support the new $3million accommodation facility donated to the community by the Reed Charity Foundation.

The 20 room, three storey building provides much needed help to patients of Nambour Hospital and their families.

As the second stage of the Health Foundation's ongoing support of local cancer patients the facility offers affordable, communal-style accommodation to patients of the Cancer Centre at Nambour Hospital. The Cancer Centre was opened at Nambour Hospital in 2006 after the Health Foundation's five year $1.7million fundraising campaign provided a local multidisciplinary Centre to reduce the need for patients to travel to Brisbane.

Family of patients in intensive care, cancer patients, the dialysis unit and children's ward and nursing mothers of premature babies in the Special Care Baby Unit are benefiting greatly from having a comfortable bed and somewhere to relax right beside their loved ones at Nambour Hospital

Prior to the facility's opening cancer patient "Jim" from Wondai had been renting accommodation near Nambour Hospital for months as he sought cancer treatment and then waited another lonely two months for the results of his treatment.

As he watched the facility being built Jim became a regular visitor to the Health Foundation office and a vocal supporter of the need for the facility which would not only reduce the cost of his treatment but also provide him with companionship and support while he was so far from home.

In a letter sent recently to the Health Foundation Jim thanked all supporters of the project, particularly the Reed Charity Foundation and said that when he's well he'll do all he can to help.

"Thanks once more. I have felt as if I have been among friends."

The Background ... about the Health Foundation

The Sunshine Coast Health Foundation is a Health Promotion Charity established in 1998 to support the Sunshine Coast''''s three public hospitals and ancillary services.

Foundation operational costs are met by profits of the multilevel car park at Nambour Hospital.

Surplus profits are directed back into the Health Services District by way of equipment purchases and an annual $100,000 staff training subsidy.

In the 2008/09 financial year the Health Foundation will direct $1,000,000 towards supporting the District through:

- equipment purchases
- support of the District's SNAP program (Smoking, Nutrition, Alcohol and Physical activity) which focuses on raising awareness of health lifestyle practices
- research
- service development

We are beneficiary of Mix FM's Give Me 5 for Kids appeal each year, working with the radio station to organise and coordinate fundraising activities for the appeal that's raised $1.47 million for paediatric equipment in the past nine years.

We worked with a very supportive Sunshine Coast community to raise $1.7 million in five years to establish the Sunshine Coast Cancer Centre at Nambour Hospital. The Centre was officially opened by the Minister for Health Stephen Robertson MP in 2007.
