Riding the wire, swimming through shark-infested waters and undertaking a rescue in the path of a bush fire. . .

Plucking a naked life-saver from the surf at Bateau Bay, massaging a baby's heart from underneath the operating table, resuscitating a four-year-old who'd drowned in a dam, anaesthetising a man with a steak knife through his eye, and winching unconscious bushwalkers from deep canyons. . .

For Ken Wishaw this action and adventure was all part of his work as Australia's first full-time helicopter doctor.

For over fourteen years Ken performed an integral role in breathtaking, life-or-death rescue missions. He worked with dedicated helicopter crews, in often extreme conditions and trying political circumstances, to make a very real contribution to the quality of treatment and the continuance of so many lives.

Helicopter Rescue is the inspiring story of Ken's experiences as a pioneering crew member of the Surf Life Saving Association rescue helicopter, and then as a founding member of CareFlight NSW.

It is also a compelling revelation of the vision, synergy and triumph Ken shared with the small team responsible for developing air rescue and retrieval medicine in Australia. Cooperating with various emergency services and government departments, they worked efficiently and professionally to revolutionise emergency transport care and forge the way for the sophisticated life-saving services that operate the length and breadth of Australia today.

Ultimately Ken's commitment to his career, dedication to his patients, and addiction for flying came at a huge personal price and he was faced with the inevitable anguish of having to decide between his career and his family.

Ken Wishaw is a doctor with specialist qualifications in anaesthesia. He considers his role in helping to pioneer aeromedical intensive care retrieval his highest medical achievement. Recently he has been involved in teaching advanced resuscitation and crisis management skills to other anaesthetists, particularly those in country practice, through the emerging field of simulator technology. He is also a dedicated husband and father and proud member of a successful blended family. When he needs a break he indulges his ongoing love of flying in the sport of gliding.
