Kawana Waters Police are joining forces with the District Crime Prevention Unit, local Neighbourhood Watch Groups and Sunshine Coast Crime Stoppers to ‘Turn the Screws on Crime’.
'Turning the screws on crime' is aimed at reducing number plate thefts from vehicles within the Kawana Waters Police Division.
As part of this, one way screws for number plates will be available and fitted at a Crime Prevention Display at the Kawana Shopping World.
When: Thursday September 8
Time: From 3pm to 7pm
Where: Kawana Shopping World, East car park (outside post office)
Officer in Charge of Kawana Waters Police Station, Senior Sergeant Mark Cordwell, is urging motorists to have these screws fitted to their vehicles.
"This collaborative initiative will help to reduce the occurrences of registration plates being stolen from vehicles,” Senior Sergeant Cordwell said.
“Stolen plates are often fitted to other vehicles, which are then used to commit offences in an attempt to avoid detection.
“By having people participate in this project, it is hoped people who attempt to steal number plates will be deterred and these instances will be reduced."
It takes just a few seconds for offenders to unscrew the plates held on with conventional screws so police are encouraging the public to replace standard number plate screws with "one way" security screws making them more difficult to remove.
The one way screws can't be removed with conventional tools, which deters would be thieves.
The community is asked to participate in this crime prevention program so please pass this message on to your neighbours and friends.
If your registration plates are stolen, report it to police as soon as possible and contact the Department of Transport and Main Roads to cancel them. More information is available here.
