Art and Soul
Inspired by the flourishing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art over the past 30 years, Hetti Perkins travelled with a camera crew from remote Arnhem Land to Sydney and from saltwater country to the desert heartlands of Central Australia.
The result of her research was Art and Soul, the dazzling three-part series shown late last year on ABC-TV and her companion and lavishly illustrated book of Aboriginal art of the same name.
Hetti, daughter of Aboriginal leader Charlie Perkins, is curator of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art at the Art Gallery of New South Wales and it was her aim to take readers and viewers into the world of ideas and the imagination of leading Aboriginalartists.
Along the way she was welcomed into the homes of many senior artists – from the Papunya Tula artists to John Mawurndjul and Destiny Deacon – listening to their heartfelt and intimate stories.
Share these moments as Brisbane 4BC’s Alexandria Bernard talks to Hetti about her journey and thrill to some of the xtraordinarily beautiful images from Art and Soul in a visual presentation exclusive to Noosa Longweekend.
